Reset to default settings

Hi,

I'm pretty new to this firmware and am trying it out on an WRT54GL. The firmware prior to coovap installed on the device was dd-wrt. After flashing it with the coovap firmware I somehow cant seem to change my ESSID. Although the change seems to be happening in the web interface, it still shows up as "dd-wrt". I tried "mtd -r erase nvram" to erase all old settings. But once it reboots I still can login with the previous root password (although the network settings and other settings have changed) and most importantly as per the documentation I can't seem to get the ESSID "Coova". What could be wrong? Am I using the wrong command to reset it to factory settings?

Another thing I noticed is that the router does not do a rest if I keep the reset button pressed. Is this normal behaviour?

Also how do I change the default timezone?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I sounds like you have 2

I sounds like you have 2 options:

a) flash back to the original firmware (Linksys) and then step up again to DD-WRT-the reset 30/30/30 will then reset the NVRAM.To be doubly sure, you could then telnet into the box whilst in DD-WRT and do a nvram erase then reboot

OR

b) use the failsafe method as described here http://wiki.openwrt.org/oldwiki/openwrtdocs/troubleshooting .Because Coova is based on OpenWRT, the reset button works in a different way-it WONT clear your NVRAM the way the reset button does with the DD-WRT firmware

Trying method 2

Thanks for the quick reply cabsandy. Let me try method 2 and get back.

openwrt methods failed

Hi,

I tried each and every method mentioned on the openwrt wiki to reset back my router's ESSID. None of it worked. Even in the nvram there is no mention of "dd-wrt". I noticed another problem, I cannot connect to the wireless access point despite all my best efforts. Changing configuration settings is of no use. This is really strange, it used to work just fine with the dd-wrt firmware. I'm pretty sure there's nothing wrong with the router.

A wicd problem

Hi,

I finally managed to solve this issue. I later realised that the network manager "wicd" stored the old config in a file /etc/wicd/wireless-settings.conf. The lines related to this router had to be manually deleted. Pretty strange, haven't faced a problem with wicd before.

Thanks for the assistance cabsandy.

I've been reflashing up and down on my WRT54G all weekend-although it is a pain, I've found if your stuck, do this:

1) Flash back down to the Linksys firmware and do a 30/30/30 reset
2) From there flash back up to DD-WRT-from here you can access telnet and do a nvram show and then a erase nvram/reboot.Compare the before and after nvram show to see if you've cleaned it out
2) Flash back down to Linksys
4) Finally, flash back up to Coova

The FAILSAFE method in OpenWRT should work but I've done the above as no matter how many times I pressed the reset button, it wouldn't drop into FAILSAFE-so I had to start from scratch

hope this helps

cab

this is more easy

1) Flash back down to the Linksys firmware
2) From there flash back up to DD-WRT (mini) and reset to defaults via the webgui (this cleans nvram)
3) Flash coovaAP from the dd-wrt webinterface. (upload new firmware)

Done, nvram will be clean.

Can you help with more detail

How do we do step 1. "Flash back down to the Linksys firmware"

I am just days behind you but would appreciate some help :)

Use tftp

Use tftp (also for flashing back to default linksys fw)
http://wiki.openwrt.org/oldwiki/openwrtdocs/installing/tftp

kind regards

PS This is basic openwrt knowledge, please do your homework! ;-)

RE:

Hi cab,

During the process of flashing and erasing nvrams, I upgraded to the testing version from 1.08. After which I could not load the Linksys firmware since it refused an image if it didn't have a .trx extension. So smart me renamed the .bin file to .trx and fed it happily to the router. In no less than 2 mins I got the never ending power light flashes. A bit of reading and lots of frustration led me to DrayTek Router Tools. I used this to restore the 1.08 firmware back. Nifty piece of software.

DrayTek Router Tools

I downloaded a copy of DrayTek Router Tool V4.2.0 but it doesn't say that the "firmware upgrade utility" can be used for routers other than the brand they sell is this what you used on your WRT54 ?

Where to from here?

I have CoovaAP 1.0 beta 8 installed on a wrt54gl but I have been unable to access it or reflash it.
I think I am finally making progress after much reading and hours of fumbling.
I got into failsafe mode (dmz and power light flashing about every second) and I am now able to get a steady ping response and telnet using Putty to see the OpenWRT welcome page.
Where should I go from here in order to restore the gui or reflash to get a working coova.net router?
Should use passwd to enter a password and switch to SSH and run firstboot?
